Soot Clean is a thixotropic liquid/paste specially developed to remove soot, nicotine, dirt and other pollution. The substrates should be sound and include internal and external walls, ceilings, floors, plasterwork, natural stone, statuary, paintings, smooth wood an artificial material where the use of water could be a problem. Soot Clean does not contain any harmful salts, acids or hazardous solvents which are harmful to life and the environment. The product consists of stabilised pure natural elements, which break down grease and absorb dirt.
Soot Clean is only slightly alcaline (circa pH 8.5). The substrate natural pH value should not be affected by the use of Soot Clean. The product is known to, and approved by, the Royal Institute for Monuments and Arts in Brussels (ref Dr. Eddy de Witte), the Central Laboratory in Amsterdam (ref Mr. Crevecoeur) and the Government Monument Care Service in Zeist. Soot Clean, once used, can be disposed of as a simple waste but consideration has to given to the unwanted matter that has been removed.
Application: The use of Soot Clean is simple. Always carry out a small sample test first. Beware of loose or friable surfaces which may be disturbed when the Soot Clean material is peeled off. On rough wood, Soot Clean is difficult to remove because it attaches itself to the fibres.
Check whether some paint pigments are affected (for example blue may exhibit slight fading). Using a soft brush or an artificial sponge use neat by rubbing/working the material well into the contamination to a thickness of between 0.3 and 0.6 mm. Leave for a short while before applying a second, even, coat of approximately 1 to 2 mm dependent upon the substrate texture. Do not brush in too thin (particularly at the edges) as this will make removal difficult. Try to keep the edges thicker to allow for a better grip when peeling off.
Leave to dry until the white appearance changes to transparent. The drying process may take only a few hours in summer but in the winter, when the temperature is as low as 10°C this could take a whole day. The minimum period for drying is normally 4 hours and the maximum 36 hours. It is possible to hasten the drying process by using a heater but the heat must not be directed onto the Soot Clean. Once the Soot Clean becomes transparent and appears to be dry, lift the edge and gently remove checking regularly that the material is dry. The material should peel off like an elastic skin, lifting with it the unwanted matter.
One application is normally sufficient but repeat if, and when, necessary. If any residue remains clean using Viamond 7040 KL in appropriate dilution. Dispose of Soot Clean does with consideration for the waste matter that has been removed. Soot Clean on it's own does not constitute a hazard. Please note: If Soot Clean does affect the paint pigmentation (when the test area is inspected) or when cleaning wall paintings we recommend that Fresco Clean be used.
Storage: Soot Clean has a shelf life of 6 months when kept in an unopened container. Keep strict rotation of "Use By Date". It may be better to order smaller quantities as required. Allow 8 days maximum delivery time. Securely close part used containers. If the material thickens the container may not have been properly sealed. If the paste has been left for a long period it can thicken. It may be possible to stir the paste with an ordinary spatula or mechanical stirrer. Extremely thickened material should not be used. Storage should be in the dark, temperature between 5°C and 20°C.
Tool Maintenance: Do not leave tools with metal parts in the Soot Clean as the metal will oxidise and reduce the effectiveness of Soot Clean. Tools can be cleaned directly after use with cold water and liquid soap but if allowed to dry the Soot Clean should be able to be peeled off. Brushes may be used once only. The use of artificial sponges may be more economic and effective than brushes.
